The term R&B has had a number of shifts in meaning. In the early 1950s the term rhythm and blues was mostly applied to blues records, while later on the term "R&B" was used to refer to electric blues, as well as gospel and soul music. In the 70s, rhythm and blues was used for soul and funk. These days we refer to a newer style of R&B as contemporary R&B.
